Pulled out of near retirement for one last case, homicide detective Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson) makes a promise that he will have trouble to keep. While at the crime scene of a murdered girl with his partner, Stan (Aaron Eckhart), Jerry makes a pledge to the girl's mother (Patricia Clarkson) that he will find the killer. Believing they have found the murderer in the form of Native American Toby (Benicio del Toro), the police close the case. But Jerry is not convinced and his search for the true killer begins to consume him. Finding romance along the way with waitress Lori (Robin Wright Penn), who lives with her young daughter, Chrissy, Jerry's obsession ultimately puts his new found family in danger and his own sanity into question.
